Simona Halep has been decorated with the Order of the Star of Romania, the highest civil Order as a consequence of her triumph at Wimbledon this year but also during her entire performance so far. The ceremony took place in the Cotroceni Palace in the presence of her family and boyfriend, Toni Iuruc.

Simona Halep: I’m very nervous. It’ much harder than it was in the final. I thank you. It’s a great honour. It’s an acknowledgement and appreciation for my work. I hope to inspire all the children. I want to thank my parents and my coaches that I had when I started tennis. They put a brick. I thank my team, to Teo Cercel, mister Dobre and of course Darren Cahill. I thank Romanians whom support me unconditionally. The most, I thank for the positive energy. I’m proud to be Romanian. I want to be an inspiration for all kids. Thank you again!

Klaus Iohannis, Romanian President: We have a great champion. She offered Romanians a big joy but also an example. We offer her the highest distinction for the trophy won at Wimbledon but also for her performances so far. You wrote a history page in just 55 minutes. You managed to become the first Romanian tennis player to win this title. I congratulate you! When you say Simona Halep, you say Romania!
